When looking at the most popular hobbies, collecting is definitely at the top. Whether it is stamps, model cars, Pokémon cards, or Kinder Egg toys, the principle of collecting is always the same. But what is it that attracts us so much?
First of all, the idea of having something truly valuable in our homes, something that will feed us financially and be passed on by our descendants. Perhaps everyone is tempted by the idea of having a collection filled with valuable objects, passing it on to their children, who will then expand the collection. The value of the collection will also increase over time, and the only thing that will make money is money.
There is also the thrill of searching and finding, which is similar to the feeling one gets when playing slot machines. We are looking for a rare item, and if we can find one for a good price, the endorphins are inevitable. And then there is the sensation we get when we put it in its place.
However, it is questionable whether this is really as great as the previous section suggests. This is because the reality is often somewhat different, especially when it comes to whether the value of a collection will increase. Again, we must remember that everything is governed by the laws of supply and demand. Even a very rare stamp will be worth less if no one is interested in it, and vice versa. Trends change, and the more people leave the hobby, the lower the prices will fall.
Remember that it is extremely unlikely that the average person will find a truly rare piece. And even if they do happen to find one, they most likely do not have the money to buy it. This is why most collections are not worth as much as their owners imagine.
Nevertheless, if practiced sensibly and without unrealistic expectations, it is a fine hobby. Then you can truly enjoy it.
