plaster depends on the substrate of your wall. You need a different plaster for concrete than for brick. The following guidelines apply to all types.

Prepare the wall

  1. Cover built-in parts such as windows, doors and cupboards, as well as the floor. Beat off the old plaster with a hammer and remove stains with water and degreaser. Cover unsuitable holes with putty.
  2. Set corner profiles of sheet metal in the corners of adjacent walls to be plastered. Apply a small amount of fixing mortar and press the sheet vertically. Apply only as much mortar as you need and smooth off any excess mortar with a trowel. Wait about an hour for the mortar to dry.
  3. Use plaster profiles to mark out the area you want to plaster. Use them in the same way as the corner profiles. They must be exactly vertical, so you should use a spirit level. Choose a distance of about 1.5 metres between the plaster profiles.
  4. Walls that absorb heavily (e.g. brick walls) should be painted with water using a paintbrush. This prevents the wall from absorbing the water in the plaster too soon. For relatively dry surfaces such as concrete or plasterboard, you need a primer.
  5. Apply the primer evenly with a brush or roller and let it dry.
  6. Stir the plaster in cool, clear water. Pay attention to the manufacturer\’s information. A stirrer makes mixing easier. Once no lumps are visible, let stand for a few minutes. Then stir again.

Apply the plaster

Work faster so that the plaster does not dry too quickly.

  1. The purpose of the first coat is to correct unevenness in the wall. Apply by picking up the plaster with a painter\’s spoon and throwing it at the wall with a sharp arm movement. Smooth with a trowel once two to three square feet have been applied. This layer should be about one centimetre thick. Allow the mortar to dry for several hours once the wall is completely plastered.
  2. Now apply the top coat. Dampen the plaster layer again with water. You can use a paintbrush to do this. Take a small amount of plaster and put it directly on the trowel. Apply carefully, holding the trowel at a slight angle. This layer should be about ten millimetres thick.
  3. If you have evenly distributed the plaster on the wall, slide the trowel evenly along the wall. This will soften the wall. Wait a few hours until the outer layer is visibly dry.
  4. Then you can paint the walls as you like.

The most common plastering mistakes

You should avoid these mistakes:

● The walls must be thoroughly cleaned first. Old parts or dust create an unstable surface.
● When plastering, the basic principle is “soft on hard”. Each layer must be softer than the base layer. Otherwise, cracking may occur as the wall dries.
● Take special care to plaster the corners thoroughly. Failure to do so may result in draughts.
● Never apply plaster at low temperatures. Otherwise the plaster will not adhere properly.
